AXS TV's New Second Screen Offering for Live Events Focused Programming

via Lost Remote by Natan Edelsburg

This network proprietary app has a better chance to survive than most because it will be paired with a ton of exclusive live TV events. Yet is there enough exclusive engagement experiences to draw users from twitter, texting or the dozens of other Social TV apps?  The potential is there, but I continue to believe users will want one single agnostic home for all of their Social TV engagement. The network apps would then be positioned to feed in to this neutral platform and simplify the disparity and huge number of proprietary options. Create an experience for the user as simple as turning on their TV and you have the potential for mass adoption.

Consulting firm Decipher has just completed a study on the second screen apps market and in this IBC interview MD Nigel Walley offers his conclusions on how this currently confused landscape will evolve. He believes we will see powerful platform operator apps that combine EPG, content discovery and remote control functions and these will be the gateway through which we find show-based synchronised second screen experiences. Only some programmes will need their own apps but these will benefit greatly from them. A priority for platform operators should be to add simple functions that are missing today, like volume up/down and TV on/off. Then these apps could actually replace remote controls.

There are some really smart takeaways in this interview and tons of “between the lines” hints to where Decipher really feels where the Social TV sector is moving.
